The most basic tenet of the Christian faith is forgiveness, God's forgiveness of us. In fact it is so important that we are supposed to model it in our lives. Unfortunately we don't do a very good job of it.
In order to understand better what forgiveness should look like lets take a look at what it doesn't look like.
What if God forgave us like we forgive others?
1. He would offer His forgiveness but never speak to me again.
2. He would say He has forgiven but not associate with me in any way.
3. He would forgive but avoid situations where they two of us might cross paths.
4. All events that we had planned together would be canceled.
5. If I came into a room and He was there, He would ignore me and when questioned about it He would say He had not seen me.
6. He would excuse His actions because trust had been broken.
7. He would call what happened between us abuse and would therefore be excused from reconciliation.
I could go on...there are so many ways that we miss giving true forgiveness. It seems sometimes that we (read: I) haven't evolved beyond grade five.
So how does God forgive us?
1. He sacrifices Himself.
2. He humbles Himself. Philipians 2:8
3. The thing that separated us is forgotten.
4. He draws closer to us after He's forgiven, instead of farther apart. Or maybe it's that we move closer to Him when we forgive.
5. He loves us more deeply after forgiveness occurs.
6. He repeats the process over and over again.
